Description
If you teach Jamestown and Virginia Studies then this unit is for YOU! Students will learn about the hardships faced by early colonists in Jamestown and how they were able to overcome them. Students will also learn about the government and economy of the Jamestown colony. This pack includes reading passages, graphic organizers, artifact analysis, and games for students to show their understanding. If you want to teach about the Jamestown exploration, click here.
In this section, students should focus on the “how” of Jamestown:
- How did colonists survive in Jamestown?
- How did the colonists adapt to the challenges and hardships they faced?
- How did the American Indians react to the English settlers?
- How did the colonists create a government for Jamestown?
- How did colonists develop an economic system in a new settlement?

I have used all of these things in my classroom and my students (and I) loved them! It took my students about two weeks to complete this part of the unit, but it can be shortened or lengthened to fit your pacing guide. I tell you how I used the different activities within this packet and I have provided answer keys for everything.
Virginia Studies Standard Focus:
- VS.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the first permanent English settlement in America by
- d) Identifying the importance of the General Assembly (1619) as the first representative legislative body in English America;
- f) Describing the hardships faced by settlers at Jamestown and the changes that took place to ensure survival; and
- g) Describing the interactions between the English settlers and the native peoples, including the role of the Powhatan in the survival of settlers.
- VS.4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in the Virginia colony by
- d) Describing how money, barter, and credit were used; and
- e) Describing everyday life in colonial Virginia
