Description
If you teach Jamestown and Virginia Studies then this unit is for YOU! Students will learn about early colonizers and the purpose of exploring the New World. This is meant to be the introduction to the Jamestown Colony. Students will read passages, analyze maps, and do various activities to show their understanding This is part 1 to the larger unit about Jamestown – The First Permanent Settlement.
In this unit, students should focus on the “why” of Jamestown:
- Why did England want to colonize the New World?
- Why was Jamestown selected as the place to build the English settlement?
- Why was the charters of the Virginia Company of London important?

I have used all of these things in my classroom and my students (and I) loved them! t took my students about three weeks to complete this unit, but it can be shortened or lengthened to fit your pacing guide. I tell you how I used the different activities within this packet and I have provided answer keys for everything.
Virginia Studies Standard Focus:
VS.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the first permanent English settlement in America by
a) Explaining the reasons for the English colonization;
b) Describing the economic and geographical influences on the decision to settle in Jamestown;
c) Describing the importance of the charters of the Virginia Company of London in establishing the Jamestown settlement;
